The French style has a much stronger influence here than the typical Spanish style of the rest of Mexico...

The rest of the state of Yucatan is MAYAN, a unique style shared only with the Mexican states of Campeche and Chiapas (more rural) and Quintana Roo (more commercial).

Colonial Heritage
Merida was conquered in 1542 by Francisco De Montejo.
Mayan Heritage
Merida was originally a Mayan city, T'Oh. The blocks of limestone making up its ruined structures were subverted to create the oldest cathedral in the Western hemisphere.
Together, these two cultures produced a unique and beautiful city, whose lure continues to attract visitors and potential immigrants.
