Why Mérida?
This list is definitely not sorted by importance.
01. The people
We have met friendly and helpful people from many different countries. The people of Yucatan, however, stand out as the best. I cannot put my finger on the reasons, but these characteristics are seen in people of all classes here.
02. The climate
OK, the climate here in Yucatan is HOT. Nevertheless, the heat seems a small price to pay - no more shoveling off the driveway, no more scraping at my windshield, and no more risking my life driving on icy roads.
03. The tranquility
We are country people. We bought a "quinta" on the highway to Dzitya here. Dzitya is a small village and its highway is usually lonely and quiet. We wake up to birds singing. We can sit outside and hear ... nothing but the wind and the cracking bamboo. We like that.
04. The closeness to the U.S.A.
We have our family scattered across the U.S.and we need to see them once in a while. For this reason, we chose a country close by.
05. The distance from the U.S.A.
We both are adventurous and wanted somewhere with a bit of the exotic. Mexico qualified nicely. We both thrive on a sense of challenge. Learning a new language and coping with a new lifestyle attracted us.
06. The culture
Merida has frequent concerts and plays, several art museums, and hosts performances by such artists as the Cuban Ballet Company and the Bolshoi.
07. The medical facilities
We are both getting older and will need medical attention. Merida has top quality doctors and medical facilities.
08. The cost of living
We live on about two thirds of what we spent in the U.S. Food, property, and help are all much cheaper.
